Broad Street Streetscape Improvements

Historically, Broad Street was Newark’s primary thoroughfare and a booming business, shopping and entertainment destination for the region. Since the mid-1970s, this once great boulevard has gone into decline. In 2001, the City of Newark decided to undertake a major public improvements effort to return Broad Street to its heyday as a great urban boulevard and spur economic development in the downtown.

Broad Street Station Plaza Design


In an effort to improve commuter circulation and connectivity throughout Newark and the New York City Metro area, New Jersey Transit has begun a major renovation of its commuter facilities at Newark’s Broad Street Station, a major multi-modal commuter hub. The historic station is located on a 3⁄4 acre urban plaza that acts as both a commuter hub and civic space crucial not only to the station but to the surrounding redevelopment area.

The Connecticut Convention Center Plaza & Streetscape

The Connecticut Convention Center is located in downtown Hartford, Connecticut overlooking the Connecticut River. It is the largest convention facility between New York and Boston. The Connecticut Convention Center’s 110-foot glass atrium rises ten stories above a large public plaza and tree lined, rooftop promenade.

Penn Station Exterior Circulation Improvements


Newark Penn Station was construction in the mid 1920s as a catalyst for growth in Newark’s downtown. Since that time, this historic station building has acted as a major transportation hub and gateway to the northeast. Recognizing the critical role that Penn Station will play in the revitalization of Newark, NJ Transit launched an effort to revitalize the station.  This revitalization will reconnect the station to the waterfront and downtown destinations.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NEW JERSEY

Somerset County Regional Center Greenway


In 2008, Somerset County initiated the Regional Center Pedestrian, Bicycle and Greenways Systems Plan with the goal of creating a walkable and bicycle-friendly Regional Center. The Plan establishes a strategic framework to guide policies, programs and actions of three municipalities. It proposes a Greenways System of “Complete Streets” and off-road trails that encourage walking and bicycling by connecting train stations, neighborhoods, office and downtown retail.
